If I had to choose only one painter to look at for the rest of my life it would probably be Eugene Delacroix. He called himself a Classical painter at the height of Romanticism, and he's generally regarded as the father of Impressionism by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and most of the others of that generation, who called Delacroix the greatest colorist who ever lived. Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir asked Eugene Delacroix if they could paint with him in his studio and when he declined they rented a studio across and above his so they could look down into Delacroix' studio so they could watch him paint. Eugene Delacroix was one of the two painters who really taught me to paint, the other being van Gogh. I read and studied The Journal of Eugene Delacroix, learned how to sketch motion by tracing his sketches in 30 seconds, then doing my own. I continued the practice of doing 30 second sketches all my career, sketching sports and people in restaurants, and that's how I've always gotten the illusion of motion in all my work. At MFA, Boston I studied Delacroix paintings, especially The Entombment of Christ, Lion Hunt, both of which I copied in the gallery, spent a lot of time analyzing the small Christ on the Sea of Gennsareth oil sketch, and discussed them and more with the Delacroix expert, Curator Alex Murphy. The first things I learned to do as a painter were flowers, Classical Figures, and Portraits, all from Eugene Delacroix, especially, and van Gogh. My copy of the Delacroix Lion Hunt was the first painting that I did that I REALLY liked. It was one of the last paintings I did before leaving Boston for Santa Barbara.
