"Devil's Kitchen"(Lassen National Park)
This is a live volcanic area at Lassen National Park. There’s a boiling mud pot, the round golden tones in the foreground. The boiling stream that winds through adds almost a surreal greenish tone. Notice the white/gold rock that’s very soft in places in the small crescent hill in the foreground, the middle, and the violets in the white volcanic rock. I hiked three hours to get to it, and it took me about three hours to paint it, with very little re-touching in my studio. Right at the beginning of the volcanic area was a wasp nest on the side of the wooden walk way that I had to stay on, while dragging all my painting gear with me. It totally fit in with the landscape. Devil's Kitchen was one of the spookiest places I have ever been and it was worth every bit of trouble to get to, at least once. Part of this landscape reappears in my picture of “Siegfried Slaying the Dragon Fafner” from my series of pictures on Wagner’s “Ring.”
