"Jacob Wrestling With the Angel" (after Gauguin)"
Paul Gauguin began his painting of "Jacob Wrestling With the Angel" in August 1888. Emile Bernard had joined Gauguin at Pont Aven in the second week of August, bringing with him the painting "Women on a Prairie". The painting depicts Breton women attending an event called a Pardon, and is an example of Bernard's medievally based, cloissonist based style with broad flat planes of bright color and boldly outlined and contoured shapes. Bernard also pointed out the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on Gauguin's work, which seems self-evident when one compares it to Vincent van Gogh's "Trees", a copy after Hiroshige with it's diagonally placed tree and use of red.
