"Sam and Gollum at Mt. Doom"
A study from the series of the Lord of the Rings, this was done in the late 70's or early 80's. I read the Lord of the Rings for the first time in 1978 in Boston and re-read it shortly after moving back to Santa Barbara. The creation of this series pretty much possessed me during that time, but I wasn't really a good enough painter to capture what I wanted except in this series of small oil sketches. I did learn a lot from these and the portraits that went along with the. In this sketch Gollum has tried to take The Ring from Frodo as they approach the Crack of Doom where Frodo is to destroy The Ring. Frodo's servant and protector Sam, discovers the plot, stops Gollum, and would probably kill him, until Frodo, who has become extremely wise in compassion stops him. I especially like the chaotic bluish strokes in the foreground, against the orange of the fire at the Crack of doom, and the action of the figures. Sometimes I wonder if these small oil sketches are better than what I did later as a Master Painter.
