Author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkein was one of the great authors of the 20th Century. Both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set against the background of The Silmarillion, but in a time long after it. Though a direct sequel to The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings addressed an older audience, drawing on the immense backstory of Beleriand that Tolkien had constructed in previous years, and which eventually saw posthumous publication in The Silmarillion. The title of the novel refers to the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other eight Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across northwest Middle-earth, following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, the hobbits Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, but also the hobbits' chief allies and travelling companions: the Men Aragorn son of Arathorn, a Ranger of the North; and Boromir, a Captain of Gondor; Gimli, a Dwarf warrior; Legolas Greenleaf, an Elven prince; and Gandalf, a Wizard. These were the nine traveling companions who set out to destroy the Ring in the volcano Mt Doom in Mordor, the seat of Sauron's power. The entire story has enough twists and turns to fill three books, and much later, three movies totaling 14 1/2 hours of riveting drama as Frodo, the Ringbearer and Sam wind their way to the Crack of Doom to destroy the One Ring with the aid of Gollum, who had once possessed it and was completely under it's power. Tolkien's influence weighs heavily on the fantasy genre that grew up after the success of The Lord of the Rings.
