This is the first of two portraits I've painted of Malcolm X. I did this one while I was reading his autobiography in 1979. The Autobiography of Malcolm X was very influential for me. I had lived in a black ghettos in Boston and Oakland, I had a lot of black friends, but reading about Malcolm having a cross burned on his lawn when he was a kid and other indignities he suffered really hit a nerve with me. His work in the Civil Rights Movement ensured it's success. How much more difficult would Dr. King's work have been if he couldn't say, "If you don't deal with me, you'll have to deal with him." All the things Malcolm had to overcome to do the great works he did were a great inspiration to me to overcome the obstacles put in my path to achieve what I have achieved in life.
