"Miranda in the Hall of the Gods"
From Raymond E. Feist's novel Shadow of a Dark Queen, the first book in his The Serpentwar Saga. Miranda has entered the Hall of the Gods, where the Warden of the Celestial City approaches her floating above the stone floor. Miranda used every trick of perception she had, noticing the floor of the Hall was partitioned by some faint energy. In each area beings moved, humans from their outward appearance, but all wearing some of the strangest fashions she had ever seen. The great windows were set with crystal panes so clear the white snow fields outside reflected the the afternoon sunlight on the peaks above. The Warden touched foot to the stone floor. Several others turned to observe the confrontation. Miranda threw back her cloak's hood, shaking her dark hair as she glanced around the Hall. "What cause brings you here?" asked the Warden of the Celestial City. "I come because there are terrible forces gathering, and this world stands in jeopardy. I have visited the Oracle of Aal. Those forces that march are committed to a course of action that will bring about the end of all we know, including this." She waved her hand, indicating the Hall.
