"Gunfight at the OK Corral"
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a 30-second gunfight that took place at about 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. The gunfight was fought between outlaw Cowboys and lawmen. It is generally regarded as the most famous gunfight in the history of the American Old West. The gunfight took place between outlaws Billy Claiborne, Ike and Billy Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury, and opposing lawmen: town Marshal Virgil Earp and his brothers Morgan and Wyatt, aided by Doc Holliday. Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne ran from the fight unharmed, but Billy Clanton and both McLaury brothers were killed. Lawmen Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded but Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were unharmed. This painting comes from my 2011 trip to Tuscon and Tombstone, Arizona. I went to the daily reenactment of the Gunfight at the OK Corral, painted this picture and one other of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday walking away. I was thinking of Vincent van Gogh with the blood red facade of Big Nose Kate's Saloon and the dark blue sky forcing all of the action forward, almost off the canvas with Wyatt on the left, Doc shooting straight at you, Morgan falling wounded, and Virgil has shot Billy Clanton, lying dead in a heap in the swirling foreground with the two other dead outlaws.
