"RFK Ripple of Hope"
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."
"Ripple of Hope" speech, South Africa, 1965
One of two portraits I painted of Robert Kennedy. Like the President, RFK was a man of Peace, Equality, and Justice. As Attorney General Kennedy did more to free blacks in the South than anyone since the Civil War. When Greyhound couldn't find a driver for the Freedom Riders bus he called the company and told them, "I don't care if you have to get Mr. Greyhound himself, you find a driver for that bus." They did. He sent Federal Marshalls the integrate the Universities of Mississippi and Alabama, removing the governors from the doorways. When Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa called Kennedy a "Dirty little son of a bitch" Kennedy responded with "I'm not so little." Of his many nicknames his favorite was Ruthless Robert. Bob Kennedy hated being called "Bobby", but the one person who could get away with it happened to be the President, so the whole world ended up calling him Bobby.
