Maurice “Rocket” Richard was the greatest hockey player ever. In eighteen seasons he led the Montreal Canadiens to eight Stanley Cups, including an unprecedented five straight from 1956-1960. ” The Rocket” was the first player to score fifty goals in fifty games. A pure goal-scorer, Richard did not play with finesse, nor was he known for his passing. One of his teammates once remarked that "Maurice wouldn't even pass you the salt". Richard led the NHL in goals five times, but never in points. He scored 544 for his career, along with 421 assists. In the playoffs “Monsieur Hockey” added another 82 goals and 44 assists in 133 games. In 1944 he had twelve goals in nine playoff games, and eleven goals in ten games in 1958. Always known for his fierce determination, when he retired at age 39, “The Rocket” held the team record for most penalty minutes. Blackhawks goalie Glenn Hall said: "What I remember most about Rocket was his eyes. When he came flying toward you with the puck on his stick, his eyes were all lit up, flashing and gleaming like a pinball machine. It was terrifying". When teamate Elmer Lach’s overtime goal won the 1953 Cup, Richard’s celebratory hug was so powerful that it broke Lach’s nose!
You were the greatest, Rocket!!!!
Thanks for the memories!!!
