"Sweetwater at the Miami Pop Festival, 1968"
This is one of my favorite bands, Sweetwater, at the first Pop Festival in Miami, 1968. Pictured from left are August, Fred, Nancy, and Albert performing their heads-off almost a year before Woodstock. Behind Nancy is the fuzzy, blonde "brillo" hair of Steve, one of their favorite roadies. Sweetwater shared bills with the Doors, Janis, Jimi, the Airplane, the Dead and many more.
Half a million fans saw Sweetwater open as the first band at Woodstock. Tragedy struck later when singer, Nancy Nevins, was nearly killed by a drunk driver. The accident shattered Sweetwater's career. Since then, Nancy created a solo album, inspired a movie which airs world-wide, "Sweetwater, A True Rock Story" starring Amy Jo Johnson and Michelle Phillips, and reunited Sweetwater for a live cd. This painting is from a photo by Bill Mankin. You can see it and a lot more on Nancy's website, www.NancyNevins.com
