"The Who - Pete Townshend"
With the possible exception of the Rolling Stones with Brian Jones, The Who was the greatest rock band ever. Singer Roger Daltrey was everywhere, Drummer Keith Moon was an absolute madman on drums, but would also play soft, rythmic passages when it was called for. Bassist John Entwhistle anchored the show. Guitarist Pete Thownshend was a showman with no equal. God itself could have been on that stage, but you would still have to look at Townshend. As a composer Townshend was probably the greatest of the 20th Century. Say what you want about the Classical Composers, all of whom I'm very familiar with, and from Townshend's short songs, to his operas, he had no equal, with the possible exception of Prokofiev. No need for weird dissonance here, just great straight on music like Beethoven and Mozart with the edge of 20th Century rock.
